How to Stay Organised in a Small Tent or Trailer Tent
If you love camping but can’t stand clutter, you're not alone.
We’re exactly the same—bags everywhere, missing pegs, mismatched socks in the tent? No thanks.
Especially in small tents or trailer tents, things get messy quickly. And once your gear starts spreading out, it’s hard to relax or find anything.
Over the years, we’ve fine-tuned our setup and found a few brilliant ways to stay organised without losing the camping vibe. Whether you’re away for a weekend or a week, these tips will help keep your space tidy, efficient, and totally under control.
1. Pack by Zone, Not by Person
It’s tempting to pack a bag for each person—but you’ll be rooting through everything all weekend.
Instead, pack by activity or zone:
- Sleeping: bedding, pyjamas, torches
- Cooking: stove, utensils, tea towels
- Washing: toiletries, towels, washing-up gear
- Outdoor gear: shoes, waterproofs, sun hats
- Fun & games: books, cards, colouring, outdoor toys
Label bags or crates by category and unpack them straight into the same spot every time you pitch.
2. Use Stackable Crates or Boxes
Stackable plastic crates are a game-changer for trailer tents and small tents.
They fit easily under camp beds or tables
You can use them as side tables or shelves
They're see-through (so you can spot what’s inside)
Keep one crate for food, one for clothes, one for cooking gear. Bonus: they’re super easy to carry back and forth from the car.
3. Create a “Landing Zone” for Everyday Items
Designate one spot where keys, wallets, sunglasses, phones, and headtorches always go.
This might be:
- A hanging shoe organiser
- A camping cupboard
- A crate by the tent entrance
- A basket inside the trailer tent
Whatever you choose—make it the rule that everything goes back in the same place. Saves you hours of searching.
4. Keep the Bed Area Clear
Sleeping spaces should be for sleeping—not for gear dumping.
During the day:
- Pack away duvets and pillows into dry bags
- Tuck sleeping bags under camp beds
- Store bags at the foot end or in a corner
If you're in a trailer tent with a fixed bed, consider a soft fabric box or packing cube at the end for nightwear and bedtime essentials.
5. Bring Foldable Furniture for More Storage
A simple fold-up camping cupboard or hanging wardrobe can make your tent feel 10x more spacious.
Use it for:
- Clothes
- Toiletries
- Snacks and tea/coffee supplies
- Plates and mugs
It gives everything a place—and helps avoid rummaging through bags every morning.
6. Have a Dirty Laundry Bag (or Box!)
Don’t let used socks or muddy clothes pile up in corners.
Bring a collapsible laundry bag, a mesh sack, or just a labelled crate.
Keep it away from clean gear and pop it straight into the boot when you leave.
7. Use Hooks and Hanging Storage
Maximise vertical space! In small tents or trailer tents, walls and roof poles are your best friends.
Use:
- Hanging organisers with pockets
- S-hooks on poles or guy lines
- Velcro straps for hanging lights, towels, or wash bags
It keeps the floor clear and makes your tent feel bigger.
8. Stick to a Layout That Works—Every Time
We set up our trailer tent the same way on every trip.
Kitchen left. Beds back. Storage front. It saves time and avoids confusion.
Once you find a layout that works for your gear, stick to it. Everyone learns where things are, and packing down is faster too.
9. Have a Grab-and-Go Kit for Essentials
Keep one bag or box with the things you always need to grab quickly:
- First aid kit
- Baby wipes
- Torch or headlamp
- Power bank
- Toilet roll
- Wet weather gear
Whether it’s a quick dash to the loo or a sudden rain shower, you’ll have the essentials ready.
10. Tidy Daily (Just a Little)
It doesn’t have to be spotless, but a quick tidy once a day keeps things calm.
- Sweep the groundsheet (yes, always pack a small broom!)
- Fold blankets and stack chairs
- Wipe down the table and reset your cooking gear
- Do a bin check and remove any rubbish
Five minutes in the morning or before dinner is all it takes.
Bonus Tip: Prep Before You Leave
Organisation starts at home.
Pack using clear bags, labels, or colour coding. Keep your camping gear stored in a few ready-to-go crates or boxes, so every trip starts the same way.
We keep one for:
- Kitchen gear
- Sleeping kit
- Trailer tent tools and extras
- Lighting and electrics
That way, nothing gets forgotten—and unpacking is just as simple when you get home.
Why It’s Worth Staying Organised
Camping in a small space doesn’t have to feel chaotic.
A tidy tent or trailer tent means less stress, more time to relax, and fewer family arguments when someone can’t find their toothbrush (again).
Plus, you’ll spend more time enjoying nature—and less time digging through bags in the dark.
Organisation doesn’t take the fun out of camping—it makes space for it.
