Driving Directions Cabin is located about 20 miles south of Ennis Montana on the border of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. The route is well signed at all turns. From Ennis, travel 11 miles south on U.S. highway 287 to Cameron. Turn due east for three miles, follow road due south for 11/2 miles, due east one mile and due south one mile. At the sign Bear Creek, travel southeasterly for two miles to the site. The last five miles are gravel or dirt. The road may be muddy or snow covered and may not always be plowed the entire distance. Maps (Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest South) may be purchased ($10.00) by calling the Madison Ranger District at 406-682-4253.

Available Dec 1 through April 30. The Bear Creek Bunkhouse is located at the edge of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, at the foot of the Madison Range. The cabin is used as an administrative site during the summer and fall months. Bear Creek runs near the cabin and the Bear Creek Wildlife Management Area lies immediately to the north. Several trails are available for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the wilderness. The elevation is 6250 feet. This one room cabin has electrical power and is equipped with lights, a refrigerator and a stove with oven. There is a wood stove for heat and firewood is provided, stacked to the east of the cabin. The cabin has two single beds and sleeps two people. There is a table and chairs and basic cooking equipment. The larger Bear Creek rental cabin is located about 100 feet away. The outhouse is located 150 feet east of the cabin, on the south side of the larger cabin, and there are two additional concrete vault toilets in the adjacent campground. The creek is the only source of water and may be difficult to access in winter. The water must be properly filtered, treated or boiled for drinking or cooking purposes. Horses are not allowed within the cabin fence but corrals may be available at the campground. Cabin fee is $30.00 per night. Fee to rent cabin is non-refundable within 14 days of arrival date.
